California court holidays: every day the courts are closed, 2026 to 2030
Generated by the same function every deadline on this site is rolled against (CCP § 12a). Four of these are not federal holidays, which is where out-of-state calendars and generic date pickers go wrong.
Each year is also published on its own printable one-page sheet. Only 2026 is verified against a published Judicial Council calendar; the rest are projected from the statutory rules and say so.

Core CCP rules were checked against Westlaw (via CoCounsel legal research) on August 20, 2026. County local rules are paraphrased summaries; individual department standing orders are NOT included. Verify every date against the operative code sections and your court’s rules before relying on it. Using this site creates no attorney-client relationship.

Subscribe to these closures
Rather than checking a page, put the closures in your calendar once. This feed carries all 5 years above as all-day entries, marked free rather than busy so it will not make you look unavailable, and each entry says whether its year is verified or projected.
Using a personal Outlook.com address rather than a work one? Add it there instead. On anything else, paste the copied address into whatever your calendar calls subscribing to a calendar by URL. In Google that is Other calendars, then From URL. In Outlook it is Add calendar, then Subscribe from web.
Your calendar decides how often it re-checks, so a correction can take a day or two to appear. The feed covers 2026 through 2030; it deliberately does not run further, because the Judicial Council has not published those years.
Running a library, chapter or firm page where readers ask for this table? Put it on that page instead of linking out, with the court holiday widget. One script tag or a WordPress plugin, and the dates stay maintained here.
Every deadline this site computes, on one printable page with the code section for each: the California litigation deadline chart.
Is court open on a given day?
The 14 closures first, then the days that look like closures and are not. A deadline counted across a day in the second list lands early, which is survivable. Counted across a day in the first list, it lands late.
| Day | Courts | When it falls, and why |
|---|---|---|
| New Year's Day | Closed | January 1 |
| Martin Luther King, Jr. Day | Closed | third Monday in January |
| Lincoln's Birthday | Closed | February 12. Not a federal holiday, so out-of-state calendars miss it |
| Presidents' Day | Closed | third Monday in February |
| Farmworkers Day | Closed | March 31. Not a federal holiday, so out-of-state calendars miss it |
| Memorial Day | Closed | last Monday in May |
| Juneteenth | Closed | June 19 |
| Independence Day | Closed | July 4 |
| Labor Day | Closed | first Monday in September |
| Native American Day | Closed | fourth Friday in September. Not a federal holiday, so out-of-state calendars miss it |
| Veterans Day | Closed | November 11 |
| Thanksgiving | Closed | fourth Thursday in November |
| Day after Thanksgiving | Closed | the Friday after Thanksgiving. Not a federal holiday, so out-of-state calendars miss it |
| Christmas | Closed | December 25 |
| Columbus Day | Open | second Monday in October. A federal holiday, and the most common mistake on this list. It is not a California judicial holiday and the courts are open. |
| Admission Day | Open | September 9. A California state holiday under Gov. Code § 6700 that CCP § 135 does not adopt as a judicial holiday. |
| Lunar New Year | Open | varies, January or February. A California state holiday that CCP § 135 does not adopt. State offices may close; the courts do not. |
| Diwali | Open | varies, October or November. A California state holiday that CCP § 135 does not adopt. State offices may close; the courts do not. |
| Genocide Remembrance Day | Open | April 24. A California state holiday that CCP § 135 does not adopt as a judicial holiday. |
| Good Friday | Open | the Friday before Easter. Recognised only as a partial day, from noon to 3:00 p.m., and a partial day is not a judicial holiday. The courts are open and the clock runs. |
Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve are not judicial holidays in their own right, and in most years the courts are open on both. They still appear as closures in some years, because a holiday falling on a Saturday is observed the preceding Friday: Christmas 2027 falls on a Saturday, so the closure is Friday, December 24, and New Year’s Day 2028 is observed Friday, December 31, 2027. Check the year, not the name.
The days that trip people up
March 31 is now Farmworkers Day. It was Cesar Chavez Day until AB 2156 renamed it, an urgency statute effective March 26, 2026 amending Gov. Code § 6700. The date did not move and the courts still close, so nothing about the count changes. Only the name did.
Columbus Day is a federal holiday and California courts are open. Lunar New Year, Diwali, Genocide Remembrance Day (April 24) and Admission Day (September 9) are California state holidays but not judicial holidays. The courts are open and the clock keeps running (CCP § 135, Gov. Code § 6700).
Those five are the errors this engine was built to avoid. Native American Day was the one it initially got wrong, because statutory analysis and the published calendar disagreed. The official Judicial Council calendar controls. Courts do close on the fourth Friday in September, and the engine was corrected to follow the calendar rather than the analysis.
Individual superior courts may also close by emergency order under Government Code § 68115. See Rowan v. Kirkpatrick (2020) 54 Cal.App.5th 289. Those closures cannot be predicted and are not in this list. Re-verify against the published Judicial Council calendar each year, which is the controlling source.
